Glaucoma Management

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60, so early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma are essential for managing long-term vision loss. While vision lost to glaucoma can’t be brought back, regular eye exams and treatment can retain as much of your vision as possible.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a complex group of eye diseases that cause progressive, irreversible damage to the optic nerve, leading to permanent loss of vision. It is the second leading cause of blindness. And while family history can put you at a higher risk, everyone is at risk for glaucoma.

Most forms of glaucoma have no symptoms or early warning signs, making regular and complete eye exams essential for proper disease detection and management.

Treatment of Dry Eye

Dry Eye Syndrome, or Dry Eye Disease, is one of the most common eye conditions world-wide.

Dry eye symptoms can range from mild to severe and can arise as feelings of gritty, sandy eyes, tearing, redness, intermittent blur, or even discomfort and pain.

Dry eye can be caused by many different things such as age, medications, underlying health conditions, eye strain or other environmental factors.

For the most effective treatment of dry eye you will need a dry eye evaluation in order to determine the source of your dry eye. The doctors at Plaza Lane Optometry can then prescribe an appropriate treatment for your specific type of dry eye, whether it be artificial tears, punctal plugs, hot compresses, lid hygiene, medicated eye drops, or a combination of the above.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the front of the eye. There are 3 layers to the tear film: the outermost aqueous layer, middle oily (lipid) layer, and the innermost mucin layer. Each component is produced by different glands on or near the eye. and all three of these must function well in order to have a healthy tear film. When one or more of these layers is compromised, symptoms of dry eye occur.

What are the Symptoms?
  • Burning sensation

  • Itchy eyes

  • Foreign body sensation

  • Heavy eyes

  • Eye fatigue

  • Sore eyes

  • Dryness sensation

  • Red eyes

  • Photophobia

  • Blurred vision

Can dry eye cause permanent damage?

Yes. Dry eye can cause inflammation and possibly permanently damage the surface of the eye due to inflammation. Dry eye syndrome also can also reduce the efficacy of LASIK and cataract surgery. The best way to prevent this damage from occurring is to schedule an appointment with us today.

What is the Treatment?

There is no permanent cure for dry eye; however, there are several treatments that will improve our patients’ symptoms. The most common treatment that we will recommend is the use of artificial tears supplements. These tear supplements are readily available and easy to apply. For more severe cases, we will recommend the use of silicon plugs in the tear drainage canal. These plugs will slow down the tear drainage out of the eye and allow more tears to remain providing natural lubrication.

Punctal occlusion is simple and painless and usually quite successful. Early detection and treatment of dry eye is important to prevent damage to the eye from the formation of scar tissue. If you are experiencing symptoms of dry eye, call our office for an appointment as soon as possible. We will perform a series of tests to determine whether dry eye is the problem.
